HI-783 Marine Magnesium Checker

The HI-783 Checker is a compact, easy-to-use electronic tester for measuring the level of marine magnesium in saltwater and reef aquariums. This practical Checker kit includes everything you need for the accurate measurement of marine magnesium, including reagents and syringes for easy testing out of the box.

The digital HI-783 magnesium tester covers a comprehensive range for magnesium, from 1,000-1,800 ppm in Mg. This Checker requires a single AAA battery for operation, which is included in the kit, and features auto-shut-off after 10 minutes of inactivity to save battery life.

Why measure magnesium?

A specific level of magnesium is essential in saltwater reef tanks that contain coral. Magnesium acts as a buffer to maintain levels of calcium and alkalinity within the tank, providing the resources that corals need to develop and grow successfully. Lower levels of magnesium below the ideal 1,200-1,400 ppm range can lead to a low pH and a reduced calcium level, affecting the health of your coral and tank overall.

Using a Checker colorimeter to measure magnesium in your marine fish tank removes the perception element of testing. The results of testing are clearly displayed on a digital screen, providing instant insight into the magnesium levels in your aquarium without the need to retest to determine the accuracy of your results.

How does the HI-783 work?

The HI-783 marine magnesium Checker uses an adaptation of the colorimetric EDTA method using calmagite indicator. In this method, the reagent and indicator provided with the magnesium tester create a measurable reaction with the 10 ml saltwater sample. This reaction causes a blue to violet tint in the sample vial, which is then read by the Checker to provide clear digital results in ppm.

The HI-783 includes a starter kit for reagents including reagent for 25 tests, so you can start testing the marine magnesium in your reef tank immediately.

Steps to test

1. Check that all vials, syringes and tips are clean and dry

2. Press the ON/OFF button on the Checker and wait for ‘Add’, ‘C.1’ and ‘Press’ to appear

3. Prepare the vials for ‘C.1’ by:

  • Placing the syringe tip onto the syringe with O-rings for a proper seal
  • Taking the 5 ml syringe with black print and measuring 4 ml of the liquid HI-783A-0 reagent before slowly dispensing into the clean, dry vial. If any reagent remains in the tip, draw air to expel the remaining liquid reagent.
  • Taking the 5 ml syringe with blue printing and measuring 5 ml of sample water from your tank, with no excess left in the tip and slowly dispensing the sample into the vial, with no excess left in the tip - at this point the liquid volume should be below 10 ml
  • Screwing the cap on the vial and invert 5 times to mix thoroughly, ensuring there are no air bubbles and that there are no fingerprints or smears on the outside of the vial
  • Inserting the vial into the Checker and closing the cap

4. Press the ON/OFF button on the Checker and wait for ‘Add’, ‘C.2’ and ‘Press’ to appear

5. Prepare the vials for ‘C.2’ by:

  • Adding the sachet of HI-783IND-0 powder reagent to the vial
  • Inverting the vial 5 times to thoroughly mix, ensuring the vial is clean and there are no air bubbles
  • Inserting the vial into the Checker and closing the cap

6. Press ON/OFF again for an accurate measurement of magnesium in ppm from your tank water sample

It is important to rinse your vials, caps, syringes and tips with deionised water and allow them to dry completely before storage.

Checkers vs chemical test kits

Chemical testing kits are a popular option for monitoring magnesium within reef fish tanks. However, with corals requiring a specific range of magnesium for successful development, using personal perception to determine the results of testing can be a risk. Hanna Checkers provide an accurate digital measurement of the marine magnesium in your aquarium, enabling you to manage your water condition effectively and provide the resources needed for coral growth.
