HI-971044 Pool Line portable photometer for swimming pools, hot tubs and spas

The HI-971044 provides accurate, fast readings for multiple parameters, utilising a superior optical system that includes a reference detector and narrow-band interference filters for consistent, fast and repeatable results. With no warm-up time before measurements and an in-built tutorial mode, this device is easy to use and practical for day-to-day functionality. You can use either powder or cost-saving liquid reagents, making this photometer as cost-effective as it is practical.

The HI-971044 has an innovative optical system that offers superior performance in accuracy, repeatability, and the short amount of time it takes to perform a measurement. The use of a backlit dot matrix LED allows the use of virtual keys, making meter operation very intuitive, including selecting different methods, reviewing GLP data, recalling the last 50 measurements, and customising the meter to user preferences.

In addition, the HI-971044 is waterproof, including the cuvette holder designed with ridges to protect the optical path from getting scratched by the cuvette and a protected battery compartment that holds three AA batteries. The compact design fits comfortably in hand for use in the field or on a table for benchtop use. The LCD is 71 mm (2.75") by 37 mm (1.6") and is backlit for easy viewing under all conditions.

HI-971044 features

Advanced optical system

The HI-971044 features an LED that generates very little heat, plus a reference detector that modulates the voltage to LED for consistent light output. In addition, this device includes an 8 nm narrowband interference filter that is accurate to +/- 1 nm and offers a 25% increase in light efficiency. A concave focusing lens that reduces errors from imperfections in the cuvette, ensuring the highest possible accuracy.

Stable light source

The internal reference system of the HI-97104 photometer compensates for any drifts due to power fluctuations or ambient temperature changes. With a stable light source, the readings are fast and stable between your blank (zero) measurement and sample measurement.

High-efficiency LED

LED light sources offer superior performance compared to tungsten lamps. LEDs have a much higher luminous efficiency, providing more light while using less power. They also produce little heat, which could otherwise affect electronic stability.

High-quality filters

Improved optical filters ensure greater wavelength accuracy and allow a brighter, stronger signal to be received. The result is higher measurement stability and less wavelength error.

Greater light yield

A focusing lens collects all of the light that exits the cuvette, eliminating errors from imperfections and scratches that may be present in the glass. The use of the convex lens reduces the need for indexing cuvettes.

CAL Check functionality

Hanna’s exclusive CAL Check feature allows for performance verification and calibration of the meter using NIST traceable standards. Our CAL Check standard vials are developed to simulate a specific absorbance value at each wavelength to verify the accuracy of subsequent readings.

Multiple measurement methods

Users can select powder reagents supplied in packets or low-cost liquid reagents provided in a dropper bottle.

Built-in reaction timer

Waiting for the proper reaction time is crucial when performing colorimetric measurements. The countdown timer displays the time remaining until a measurement is taken, ensuring consistent results between sample measurements and users.

Large cuvette size

The sample cell of the HI-971044 fits a round glass cuvette with a 25 mm path length. The relatively long path length of the sample cuvette allows the light to pass through more of the sample solution, ensuring accurate measurements even in low-absorbance samples.

Intuitive dot matrix display

The HI-971044 includes a backlit, graphic LCD with virtual keys, a battery status indicator, and error messages. The meter interface is specifically designed to be intuitive and easy to read. A dedicated help key provides information about the current meter operation and can be used at any stage in the setup or measurement process to show contextual help.

Auto-off protection

This innovative photometer uses three standard AA batteries that allow for about 800 measurements. The auto-off feature automatically shuts off the meter after 15 minutes of inactivity to conserve battery life.

HSG282 compliant technology

The HI-971044 photometer fully complies with HSG282 guidelines for measuring and tracking pH and other chemical reporting. If you own a hot tub or heated spa pool, our technology provides the accuracy and consistency necessary to comply. To learn more about HSG282, read our complete online guide today.

Why is measuring chlorine important in pools and hot tubs?

Chlorine is a common chemical many businesses use due to its disinfection properties. Free chlorine can exist in two forms, and which form is present is based on the pH. At pH less than 7.6, the predominate form is hypochlorous acid (HOCl), while at pH greater than 7.6, the hypochlorite (OCl-) form becomes predominate. This specification is critical when preventing biological growth in water or keeping a swimming pool safe since hypochlorous acid is 100 times more effective a sanitiser.

Total chlorine represents both the free chlorine and combined chlorine present. Combined chlorine is the chlorine bound to nitrogen substances such as ammonia. In swimming pools, combined chlorine is what we can smell, often irritating the eyes. The free chlorine measurement is subtracted from the total chlorine measurement to know how much combined chlorine is present. HI-97104 is designed to measure pH and low levels of free and total chlorine in water up to 5.00 mg/L (ppm).

Why is measuring cyanuric acid important in hot tubs and pool water?

Cyanuric acid (CYA) is best known as a stabilising reagent for chlorine. It is widely applied in swimming pool and spa treatment programmes to slow down the decomposition of hypochlorous acid. In outside pool areas, this process is accelerated by the effects of UV rays. When applied correctly, it can save up to 80% of normal chlorine consumption in pools during peak months. Cyanuric acid is also used in chlorinated beaches, selective herbicides and whitening agents.

Why would you measure alkalinity in a pool, hot tub or spa?

Alkalinity is one of the most important parameters to measure in water. Alkalinity is different to pH. While pH indicates if a solution is an acid or an alkaline. Alkalinity tells you how much acid a solution can absorb without changing the pH. In simple terms, it is the buffering capacity of a solution. In the case of swimming pools and hot tubs, that solution is water.

Is the HI-971044 HSG282 compliant?

HSG282 guidelines specify that hot tub and heated spa pool operators should measure pH twice daily and keep records for up to five years to reduce the risk of sickness and infection. The HI-971044 provides complete coverage for pH testing and testing for alkalinity, chlorine and cyanuric acid to ensure a high sanitation standard.
