BL-131-20 Automatic Controller for Pools and Hot Tubs

The BL-13X series of pool dosers and controllers offer an alternative to manual measurement and dosing processes, with around-the-clock monitoring and automatic logging for consistent sanitation following setup. The BL-131 controller for pools measures and controls the pH and free chlorine levels within the water, utilising the ORP or REDOX principle as a consistent and accurate indicator of sanitiser effectiveness. The BL-131-20 includes a flow cell.

If you would like to know more about the BL-13X series of controllers for hot tubs and pools, get in contact with our pool experts at sales@hannainstruments.co.uk or 01525 850 855. Our team can provide advice and guidance on the best solution for sanitation maintenance in your pool, spa or hot tub.

About the BL-131 Controller

Built-in dosing pumps with adjustable flow and proportional band

This compact controller includes two built-in peristaltic dosing pumps with proportional control, allowing the dosing frequency to be adapted to the size of the body of water to effectively maintain the set point for pH and ORP. Large bodies of water, such as full-size pools, can use a small proportional band, such 0.1 pH, for more frequent dosing, while a controller on a hot tub can be configured with a larger proportional band, such as 1.0 pH, to avoid significant swings in water chemistry.

An adjustable flow rate further allows the BL-131 to be adapted to different pool and hot tub size requirements, with a range from 0.5 to 3.5L/h. This customisation option provides complete control over the amount of chemical dosed at one time, further preventing swings in pH or ORP.

Alarm and notification system

The BL-131 controller features a comprehensive alarm and notification system, including multicoloured LED indicators providing continual feedback on dosing, meter status and service. A programmable alarm system provides flexibility in setting alarms for low and high levels of both pH and ORP within the water. When an alarm activates, dosing stops, providing overdosing protection to prevent unnecessary chemical dosing of the water.

A built-in temperature sensor also allows for temperature alarms, alerting the user if the temperature reaches above or below a set limit. In outdoor pools and hot tubs, this functionality provides a notification that there may be a risk of water freezing in the pipes, allowing for prompt action.

Interlocking sanitation control

The efficacy of pool sanitisers is affected by the pH value of the water. The BL-131 measures and doses both pH and ORP in tandem to ensure the pH value is at a set point before dosing to increase or reduce ORP. A range of 650-750 mV at 7.2 pH indicates proper water treatment. By utilising the pH value, the BL-13X series prevents the overuse of chemicals to balance the water, reducing costs.

Customisable logging intervals

This pool controller offers complete data logging, with measurement reading intervals that can be tailored to suit personal preference or to meet compliance requirements. Measurement reading intervals can be set to 30 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes, 15 minutes, 30 minutes or 1 hour, refreshing each day or following calibration. pH, ORP and temperature values are all logged in addition to the last calibration data, event information and setup configuration.

Additional external dosing options

The BL-131 controller can be used for pools of all sizes, with the addition of 2 relays that can be connected to larger, external dispensing pumps. These relays provide greater flexibility to use the BL-13X series dosers with larger pools that exceed the limits of the built-in pumps.

Available in two configurations

The BL-13X series is available in two different configurations to suit your requirements:

  • In-line: Where the direct probe and chemical injection fittings are installed onto existing piping
  • Flow cell: Where an optional flow cell is included during installation, allowing for calibration and probe maintenance without the need to shut down the recirculation pump

If you are unsure which solution would be the ideal choice for your pool or hot tub, speak to our pool specialists directly. We can provide personalised advice for your requirements. Call on 01525 850 855 or email us at sales@hannainstruments.co.uk.

Achieve HSG282 compliance

The BL-131 and BL-132 controllers for hot tubs, spas and pools help businesses comply with HSG282 legislation. Under the HSE's 2017 legislation, both pH and sanitation should be consistently measured and reported to reduce the risk of legionella and other pathogens. Learn more about HSG282 here.

About the HI-1036-18XX Digital Probe

The HI-1036-18XX is a digital combined probe available in five different cable lengths. This probe connects to the BL-131 and measures pH, ORP and temperature in one, with a potential matching pin incorporated to prevent ground loop effects and system damage.

The pH glass for this probe produces stable quick equilibration even in low-conductivity waters. The sensor is designed to produce a zero mV value near pH 4 to stop process control if it is broken, triggering an alarm state from the controller and disabling active pumps.

The ORP sensing surface of the probe is a large, smooth-surfaced platinum band that encircles the circumference of the temperature probe. It is referenced to the Ag/AgCl reference electrode (3.5M KCl).

The ORP and pH sensors and reference electrode utilise a differential measurement technique. This technique is known to stay in service and provide accurate measurements under a wide range of conditions that may cause conventional pH probes to produce inaccurate measurements.

The following options are available for the HI-1036-18XX:

  • HI-1036-1802 probe with 2 m (6’7”) long cable
  • HI-1036-1805 probe with 5 m (16’5”) long cable
  • HI-1036-1810 probe with 10 m (32’9”) long cable
  • HI-1036-1815 probe with 15 m (49’3”) long cable
  • HI-1036-1820 probe with 20 m (65’7”) long cable
