An accurate pH meter for brewing is vital for commercial breweries, ensuring that the levels of beer are within the correct parameter range from start to finish to achieve the best taste, colour and stability. We cover how to use Hanna’s HI-98167 pH meter for commercial beermaking in this guide:

Why is it important to measure pH during brewing?

Measuring pH during the beer brewing process is essential to achieving a consistent, reliable outcome. pH is important in all stages of brewing, including mashing, boiling and fermentation. In commercial environments, reaching the same pH in every batch is important for reaching the same outcome of taste, texture and stability to match specific nutrition and brand guidelines.

Using an accurate professional pH meter for beer such as the HI-98167 Portable Beer pH Meter is an effective way to measure pH in samples of wort and beer, enabling you to quickly make any amendments required to achieve the ideal beer. How to measure the pH of wort and beer with the HI-98167

The HI-98167 beer pH meter is designed to make testing wort and beer a quick and easy task. Here are the steps you can take to measure pH with this advanced professional beer meter:

  1. Take a sample of wort and place it into a measuring cylinder, filling the beaker to a depth of more than 5cm
  2. Remove the protective cap from the electrode and submerge the tip into the sample to a depth of 4 cm/1½"
  3. Press the RANGE key to choose between pH and mV
  4. Press the MODE key to select your chosen pH resolution
  5. Allow time for the electrode to stabilise as shown visually by an hourglass on the screen
  6. Take your reading and clean and store the electrode ready for the next measurement

The pH electrode and sample need to be at the same temperature, known as thermal equilibrium, for readings of pH to be accurate.
