About the HI-96721 Iron, High Range Portable Photometer

The HI-96721 meter measures total iron (Fe) content in water samples in the 0.00 to 5.00 mg/L (ppm) range. The reagent contains both a reducing and a complex agent: the first converts all but very most resistant forms of iron present in the sample to the ferrous (Fe2+) or soluble state; the second reacts with the ferrous iron to form the characteristic orange-coloured complex.

This meter uses an exclusive positive-locking system to ensure that the cuvette is in the same position every time it is placed into the measurement cell. It is designed to fit a cuvette with a larger neck making it easier to add both sample and reagents. The cuvette is made from special optical glass to obtain best results.

    With the Hanna calibration check validation function, users can verify the performance of the meter quickly and easily at any time. Using Hanna NIST traceable standards, it takes just a few moments to check the accuracy of the instrument and to recalibrate as and when necessary.

    All new instruments are factory calibrated at source and the electronic and optical design of the Hanna photometers minimises the need for frequent calibration. The Hanna calibration check further minimises the frequency with which instruments need to be returned to the calibration laboratory for full servicing.

    About iron

    Iron is naturally present in water in low concentrations, but it reaches high concentrations in wastewater effluents. The iron concentration in water needs to be monitored because it becomes harmful above certain levels. In domestic water, for instance, iron can unpleasantly alter the taste, stain laundry, damage kitchenware and favour the growth of certain bacteria. Iron is also an indicator of ongoing corrosion in water cooling and heating systems. Moreover, iron is normally monitored in mining wastewater to avoid contamination.

    Water Resistant – Can withstand temporary exposure to water, but should not be submerged or washed under running water.

    Battery powered – Allows use away from a power source. Batteries are included with all battery operated products.

    PLEASE NOTE: In some cases, samples may contain other parameters which may interfere with results
    Interferences may be caused by: Alkalinity: above 2,000 mg/L (as CaCO3). May slow down colour development (negative error). To resolve this, neutralise the sample with diluted HCl.
    Calcium (Ca2+): above 10,000 mg/L as CaCO3
    Copper (Cu2+): does not interfere: reagent contains a masking agent.
    Magnesium (Mg2+): above 100,000 mg/L as CaCO3
    Molybdate Molybdenum: above 25 mg/L (as Mo-MoO4) (positive error) Sample containing up to 50 mg/L Mo-MoO4 may be measured if a reading is taken after 1 minute instead of 3 minutes.
    High Iron concentrations up to 200 mg/L do not inhibit colour development; above 200 mg/L colour development may be inhibited.
    High sulphide concentrations (S2-): high sulphide concentrations may interfere. To reduce sulphide: acidify the sample and boil for about 20 minutes, neutralise and adjust volume before measurements.
    Silica (SiO2): above 175 mg/L (as SiO2). May slow down colour development (negative error)
