The HI-96719 Magnesium Hardness Portable Photometer combines accuracy and ease of use in an ergonomic, portable design. A user can accurately determine the concentration of magnesium hardness within a 0.00 to 2.00 mg/L (ppm) range using the HI-93719-0 ready made reagents. The HI-96719 offers many advanced features including the exclusive CAL Check™ function used for performance verification and calibration of the meter.

    The HI-96719 portable photometer is for the measurement of magnesium hardness. Hanna's portable photometers feature an advanced optical system - the combination of a special tungsten lamp, a narrow band interference filter, and silicon photodetector ensure accurate photometric readings every time. The Hanna exclusive CAL Check™ feature utilises ready-made, NIST traceable standards to verify both meter validation and calibration. The exclusive cuvette locking system ensures that the cuvette is inserted into the measurement cell in the same position every time to maintain a consistent path length.

    Significance of use

    Water, with exception to distilled water, contains dissolved salts (magnesium and calcium carbonates). The concentration of these salts determines the water hardness, which can be expressed in calcium carbonate or magnesium carbonate. The sum of these two represents the total hardness level. In addition, water hardness is also related to the phenomenon of pipe rusting in water heating and cooling systems, reverse osmosis, and demineralisation plants.




    The HI-96719 uses an adaptation of the Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater, 18th edition, EDTA colorimetric method to measure magnesium hardness concentrations of less than 2.00 mg/L (ppm). When the reagent is added to samples containing magnesium salts, the sample will turn a violet hue; the greater the concentration, the deeper the colour. The associated colour change is then colorimetrically analysed according to the Beer-Lambert Law.




    This principle states that light is absorbed by a complementary colour, and the emitted radiation is dependent upon concentration. For magnesium hardness determination, a narrow band interference filter at 525 nm (green) allows only green light to be detected by the silicon photo-detector and omits all other visible light emitted from the tungsten lamp. As the change in colour of the reacted sample increases, absorbance of the specific wavelength of light also increases, while transmittance decreases.
