Titration is used to find the concentration of an identified chemical in a solution (e.g., water).

In our standard Titration kits, there will be a Titrant solution that is added to the solution (e.g., water) to be tested to make it change colour. The reagent is then added under monitored conditions.


Boron test kit

The Hanna HI-38074 test kit can determine boron concentration in irrigation waters by direct titration of Boric acid.

During testing, when colour change is achieved, under careful conditions - usually using a burette – the reagent is added, drop by drop, until the solution turns clear. The user will then count how many drops of reagent were used to achieve complete colour dispersal. The number of drops used will determine the chemical concentration and results can be found in the manual included.

Boric acid/borate react with chemical compounds containing multiple hydroxyls groups (polyols) such as mannitol, generating anionic complexes at the neutral pH of water.

In aqueous environments boron is mainly present as Boric acid, which is mostly un-dissociated. This is why a minimal boron concentration is required in the irrigation water for metabolic activities of the crops. However, excess boron is harmful to plant growth. Boron in excess of 2.0 mg/L in irrigation water is detrimental to many plants, but some plants may even be affected adversely by concentrations lower than 1.0 mg/L.
