What is automatic dosing for pools?

Automatic dosers, or pool controllers, are automated systems that measure the water in pools or hot tubs with an in-built probe. Using the information from logged measurements, the water is then dosed to bring pH and chlorine into the correct range to make pools and hot tubs consistently safe for use year-round.

An automatic pool doser is an accurate and reliable alternative to using digital pH testers or photometers, while removing the need to directly dose the water yourself with pH Plus, pH Minus or chlorine chemicals after initial setup. Following installation, the range for both pH and chlorine (using ORP) can be adjusted to the size and requirements of the pool for precise dosing that maintains healthy water quality day after day.

Do I still need to test the pool water?

A pool controller handles the testing and dosing of both pH and chlorine in the pool. Other parameters, such as cyanuric acid for outdoor pools and total hardness to monitor calcium levels, can be tested separately. As these tests are less frequent, a pool controller saves significant time by removing the need for daily testing. Using a suitable digital photometer such as the HI-971044 is a fast and efficient way to measure all other key pool parameters with exceptional accuracy.

How does a pool dosing system work?

A dosing system constantly monitors the water chemistry in a body of water, such as a pool or hot tub, through the use of a specially designed probe. This probe can be connected to a flow cell for easy management. Hanna’s BL range of automatic pool controllers features customisable logging intervals, allowing you to choose how frequently the water is tested. Containers of chemicals are connected directly to the controller, allowing for precise dosing with peristaltic dosing pumps based on the testing results.

After each test, the controller will automatically dose first pH and then chlorine with the attached chemicals to reach the pre-defined range for safe sanitation. The logged measurements and the dosing information can be found through the menu on the controller or can be seen through the Hanna Lab app on a smartphone or tablet with cloud-connected controllers such as the BL-132-20.
