Alkalinity is a measure of the capacity of a water sample to neutralise an acid to a set pH, and hence its ability to resist sudden changes in pH. Alkalinity is typically determined by the levels of ions such as carbonate (CO3²-), bicarbonate (HCO3-) and hydroxide (OH-). These ions enter water levels as the water travels through soils and rocks, such as limestone, containing these ions. It is particularly important to monitor alkalinity in drinking water, effluent water, soils, boilers and cooling systems.

From Chemical Test Kits to portable and bench Photometers, Hanna offer a wide range of instruments ideal for measuring alkalinity levels.
